| What is the competition format? | |
National Title Competition
Racers, competing in their age & gender category in their division and discipline, will take two runs on Friday and two runs on Saturday. The best handicap earned Friday and the best handicap earned on Saturday will be averaged to determine each competitor’s final handicap. |
Competitors will be seeded by gender & age within their division. Physically challenged and telemark division competitors will race first on the Silver & Bronze Division venues followed by the alpine divisions. The snowboard division will compete on its own course - separate from the alpine racers. There will be three venues for the Platinum & Gold Division racers and three venues for the Silver & Bronze Divisions, snowboarders, telemarkers and competitors under 4 years of age and competitors 75+ years of age.
For Friday’s races, adults 21 and older will race in the AM and the Kids, 20 years and younger will race in the PM. Competitors will race in bib order at 20-second intervals on each course. The second run will start as soon as all racers have completed their first run.
The breakout rule will be applied to silver and bronze division racers. Silver and Bronze Division racers that earn a medal or handicap that is two divisions higher than their qualifying division during the first day of competition (Friday) will be moved to that division for the second day of competition (Saturday). Competitors that breakout of either the bronze or silver division must compete on the Platinum/Gold race venue on Saturday. Competitors that move up or breakout will use their best handicap earned during Saturday’s race to earn their final result (i.e. their breakout handicap which was earned on an easier course will not be used to determine their final result.
If a bronze division racer earns a gold medal handicap during the first day of competition at the Nationals, that racer will be moved to the gold division for Saturday’s competition and will earn a final result in the gold division. If a silver division racer earns a platinum medal handicap during the first day of competition that racer will be moved to the platinum division for Saturday’s competition and will earn a final result in the platinum division. Only silver and bronze division racers can get bumped to a new division. There is no breakout rule for Gold and Platinum Division racers.
For Saturday’s races, the kids 20 years and younger will race in the AM, and the adults 21 years and older will race in the PM.
The best handicap earned each day will be averaged (added together and divided by two) to determine each competitor's final National Championships handicap. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be presented to the first, second and third place finishers in each age & gender category in each division during Saturday's awards ceremony. |
The competitor with the best final handicap in each age & gender category in each division will win a National Title!
| |
Final Race of Champions Competition |
Competitors who win a National Title will be invited to compete in Sunday's "Nature Valley NASTAR Race of
Champions" in a winner-take-all race in one of four disciplines - Female Alpine, Female Combined (snowboard, telemark & physically challenged), Male Alpine, Male Combined (snowboard, telemark & physically challenged).
Each qualifying racer will carry their winning National Championships handicap into the race to level the playing field. If a participant’s winning handicap is higher than the handicap maximum for their division, they will be assigned the maximum handicap for their division. |
Within each discipline, competitors will be seeded by their National Championships handicap
with the highest handicaps racing first. Each racer will get one run.
During each discipline's race, the competitor with the fastest handicapped time will ascend the podium
until he/she is bumped off by a faster discounted time.
Immediately following each discipline's race,
the competitor
with the fastest handicapped time will receive a "Race of Champions" trophy and
be crowned the overall "Nature Valley NASTAR National Champion"!
Within each discipline, Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be presented to the three competitors with the fastest handicapped times. In addition,
Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be presented to the competitors with the fastest raw times.
The male and female racers that post the fastest raw times will win a trip to Chile to train with the US Ski Team!
| |
Resort Team Competition
Unless selected otherwise during the online registration process for the National Championships, competitors will represent the resort from which they qualified in the Resort Team Competition.
Resort teams will be scored based on a team point average. Team members score points for their team based on their final National Championships handicap. Only the top six point gainers from each resort will be used to score points for their resort team. The number of team points earned by these top point gainers are added together and divided by six to get the Team Score.
In the event of a tie, a 7th team member's National Championships handicap will be factored in to the Team Score. If the tie persists, National Championships handicaps for additional team members will be factored in to the Team Score until the tie is broken.
The NASTAR Handicap Chart shows the handicap needed in each age & gender category to earn a
particular number of team points. Click here to view the NASTAR Male & Female Handicap Chart.
The number of team points indicated on the chart is a range. Since team points are interpolated,
the exact number of team points you earn will be within this range.
Resort Team awards will be given to the first, second, third, fourth and fifth place resort teams. The resort team with the highest Team Score will be awarded the National Resort Team Title!

World’s Largest Recreational Ski & Snowboard Race Program Moves to Winter Park Resort for 2010
Bonnier Mountain Group, publisher of Skiing magazine, SKI magazine, Warren Miller Entertainment and owner of NASTAR, the world’s largest recreational ski and snowboard race program, announced today that Winter Park Resort in Winter Park, Colorado, will be the official host site for the 2010 Nature Valley NASTAR National Championships March 25 – 28, 2010.
For the past four years, the national championships were held at Steamboat Ski Resort in Steamboat Springs, Colorado where over 1,000 racers competed each year during this multi-day event. This winter, NASTAR will celebrate the event's 42nd Anniversary and 1,300 racers are expected to compete in the Nature Valley National Championships.
Racers qualify for the National Championships by earning a top-three ranking in their age division at any of the 120+ Nature Valley NASTAR ski resorts throughout North America. In 2009, competitors age 3 to 90 from 43 states as well as Canada, Australia, Chile and England competed in age and gender categories in alpine, telemark, snowboard & physically challenged categories for the chance to win a National Title.
“Winter Park Resort is extremely excited and proud to be partnering with NASTAR to host the National Championships this March," said Gary DeFrange, president and chief operating officer of Winter Park Resort. "With so many people anticipated to attend this year's event, winter sport enthusiasts will enjoy Winter Park Resort’s tremendous value coupled with our close proximity to Denver. It seems only fitting that we celebrate our 70 anniversary with such a long standing event and hope the racers and their families enjoy the many recent additions to the resort including the Village at Winter Park, four new lifts, new terrain and lodging.”
“There’s little doubt that Winter Park will prove to be a tremendous host,” said Bill Madsen, director of operations for NASTAR. “The resort and the town itself have a great ski racing heritage and will be a terrific destination for NASTAR competitors of all ages. Winter Park is truly excited to showcase all that they have to offer with the NASTAR community. Next season’s NASTAR National Championships will be an event not to be missed.”
Kicking off in mid-November at 120+ resorts throughout the country, ski and snowboard enthusiasts racing NASTAR will have the opportunity to qualify for the NASTAR National Championships through season-long resort rankings. The three-day competition will take place March 25 – 28, 2010 at Winter Park Resort and will bring together top recreational ski and snowboard racers of all ages and abilities from across the country to compete for national titles while enjoying three days of spirited competition, first-class skiing, warm western hospitality, partying and fun.
Developed by SKI Magazine in 1968, NASTAR (NAtional STAndard Race) is the largest recreational ski and snowboard race program in the world. Since the program’s inception four decades ago, more than six million racer days have been recorded by NASTAR. Last season alone, over 220,885 NASTAR racer days were recorded and a record 553,808 starts.
