What is the NASTAR community?

Welcome to our new and improved site. Here, you can interact with other racers on the forum, post your own photos and stories, and read the latest news on racing, skiing, resorts, family activities, and gear. Log in to join the conversation.

Why do I need two logins?

You might have noticed that our site has changed. We've added a new and improved forum, a photo section where you can share your own photos, and ski tips, travel ideas, and more to keep your racing improving. To be a part of the community you'll need to register and create an account. We encourage all NASTAR members to use their NASTAR Registration Number and password when they create their NASTAR community log in to simplify their experience.

Ski with your Ankles

Strong ankle flexion will improve your balance and your confidence
sweetspot trainer

Most people overlook the importance of ankle flexion when they are working on improving their technique, but the ankles are the key to success. When we watch a great skier making turns down a mountain they appear to be standing on their skis with little effort. This can only be accomplished when the ankles are flexed so that the skier can maintain a balanced position as the skis move under them.

The Skia Sweetspot Trainer is a great tool for finding our balance point as it forces us to flex our ankles to find a balanced position. The first thing you will notice when you strap the trainer to your boots is that it is not easy to maintain your balance. It is even more difficlut when we move from a standing neutral position to a compact or tuck position. Our point of balance changes significantly and the Sweetspot Trainer provides immediate feedback so that we can learn to fine tune our movements.

The key to maintaining balance while on skis or on the Sweetspot Trainer is ankle flexion. When we get scared the tendency is to lean back but when we have confidence in a balanced position we can ski aggressively and more efficiently. Positive ankle position provides the foundation for a strong athletic stance which allows us to move from a position of power.

It is important to remember that skiing is a dynamic sport and that the terrain and our position on the mountain are constantly changing. We don't want to be static and attempt to maintain a balanced position by holding a rigid position throughout the turn. The skis must be allowed to move freely under us and we can only do this when we are balanced.
